I've heard of the chain tensioner issues, any other major watch outs to ask about?

Airbox pop-off valve, Carrera chain tensioners update, and the rubber centered clutch.

Hahaha. Well yes if it were me I would take on a bunch of debt and go with the fastest 911 a bank would give me a loan for. But being me is a bad idea. Spending most of your discretional income on auto loans is not a good idea (at least that's what people tell me).
In all seriousness I think the SC is one of THE best cars to buy right now. It's a reliable car and prices are going up. You really can't lose. My Dad has an '84 911SC. He bought it used around 1990 and it was his first Porsche. It's a great little car.
Have you driven one before? As long as you like how it drives then it's a great buy.

One more thing - I've learned that your most expensive car isn't necessarily your favorite car.
My cheapest car is an E46 M3. My 911 and E90 M3 are both worth at least twice what the E46 is worth. But on some days the E46 is my favorite car. It *feels* 90% as fast as the other two cars but it's more of a sleeper theses days since the E46 body is several generations old. It's the closest thing I have to a near-classic and it's very enjoyable to drive.
The SC will feel very special to you. With every passing year it will feel more like a true classic. It's 100% mechanical. All the noises and feelings you'll experience will make every drive an event.

You're welcome. If you don't already, you should really consider joining or simply reading Rennlist or Pelican Parts. They have great info like this:

I love my 914 and can never sell it. I'm looking for something as close as possible, with a little more speed.

Awesome! Keeping both would be sweeeeet
This will feel VERY different than the 914. More power and totally different handling. Having both will be a blast!

Yeah my most expensive car is the 997.1 Carrera. There have been some rumors about a 4th car but I don't know where they came from ;)

Greatest Idea™
If you haven't heard of them already (though I'm sure you have), join up Pelican Parts forum and get ta' studying. Probably the best online resource for Porsche owners.

Maybe you might know, with your dad having an 84(?). Is the market really that crazy for SCs or are people actually getting in the mid 30s. It's advertised as 33 obo. I keep seeing bunch for the 25. Is like a line from pawn stars "what people are asking, and what are they getting are two different things"?

Great idea! Why didn't I think of it myself? Oh, I do, hourly and more frequently the older I get. Get the Porsche

We had a deal, I lined up insurance, had a carfax, where I could store it then had a Pre Purchase Inspection done.
Mechanic: "Ah, do you know this cars been in an accident right?"
Me: "....."
My heart sank.

Damn! That means the perfect one is still out there waiting for you...

I learned an extremely important lesson. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgement. Always get a PPI. Best $150 I ever spent.
other things that came up "Bald super old tires, paper thin brake pads, oil leaks from gaskets dry rotting etc........ This car screams deferred maintenance."

Yes good lesson, it's worth holding out for something you'll enjoy rather than jump in to something you despise. Sounds like you dodged a bullet on that one.

A 914-6!! Or at least a conversion so you dont break the bank. =D

Hmmm. That would result in having a bunch of common parts. Although the s prices are near the same. That is an interesting thought....
